One of the country’s leading pioneers of weight loss surgery discusses surgical options on GMA.
Plano, TX, May 31, 2014 - Dr. Nick Nicholson, one of the country’s preeminent experts on weight loss surgery, was recently interviewed on Good Morning America’s Health segment where he discussed the changes in surgical options available to people struggling with obesity.
“It used to be that only people with at least one-hundred pounds to lose - the morbidly obese - were considered candidates for weight loss surgery,” says Dr. Nicholson. “And it’s not difficult to understand when you examine the risks associated with such surgery - especially in the initial years of gastric bypass when patients had ‘open’ and invasive surgeries with lengthy hospital stays. Today, with the use of laparoscopic techniques, as well as new options in weight loss surgery including the Lap-Band and of remaining obese very often outweighs the risk of surgery in not only the morbidly obese but also those with less weight to lose - the moderately obese.”
Dr. Nicholson is the founder of the Nicholson Clinic for Weight Loss Surgery, state-of-the-art facilities that offer weight loss surgical options - such as the Lap-BandⓇ Surgery, Gastric Bypass, and Sleeve Gastrectomy - along with educational resources and psychological, nutritional, and physical support. Dr. Nicholson and his team of doctors and medical professionals provide comprehensive care that starts well before surgery and extends far beyond.
As he shared on the Good Morning America segment, Dr. Nicholson is dedicated to helping people understand how important it is to consider the consequences of not getting weight loss surgery if a person’s health is suffering due to obesity. At some point, says Dr. Nicholson, it becomes necessary to consider whether staying at a certain size outweighs the risk of surgery. And as weight loss surgery has advanced over the years, it has become less invasive and safer overall, thus reducing the risk.
“When we’re doing these surgeries for morbid obesity, we’re doing it for a variety of reasons; not the least of which is people live longer; we can literally cure their diabetes; we can cure their hypertension. That in and of itself is important and that’s what our goal is with any disease. But remember over the last 15 to 20 years we’ve moved from the concept of curing diseases to preventing diseases. So I would make the argument that we’re going to save even more lives and impact more lives in a positive fashion if we prevent people from ever developing diabetes and hypertension in the first place.” [Dr. Nick Nicholson on Good Morning America]
