Sleeve Gastrectomy is Gaining Popularity

Plano, TX, October 13, 2015 – Gastric bypass and lap band procedures have long served as the two main choices for people hoping to shed pounds through surgical intervention. A third choice, however, is gaining ground and popularity as its less invasive nature continues to show pleasing results.

“Sleeve gastrectomy procedures are less involved than gastric bypasses and may deliver more lasting benefits than banding procedures,” says Dr. Nick Nicholson, founder and lead surgeon at the North Texas-based Nicholson Clinic, one of the top weight loss surgery centers in the country. “While this procedure has long been proven effective, it is now only coming into its own as a more popular choice for those seeking permanent solutions for weight loss.”

The sleeve gastrectomy has received a stamp of approval from such organizations as the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, the Obesity Society and the American Society for Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery, among others. The operation is similar to a bypass in many regards, but is less altering to the body. It calls for the removal of about 75 percent of the stomach. The remaining organ is then fashioned into a banana-shaped pouch with a significantly reduced holding capacity. While the procedure promotes a feeling of fullness faster, it does not change how the body digests food like a bypass does.

“The sleeve procedure does call for a permanent alteration of the body, but the impacts are less involved than those found with the bypass,” Dr. Nicholson says. “The results, however, are very pleasing with most patients losing the weight they need to and keeping it off over the long run.”

Sleeve gastrectomy procedures serve as a middle ground between banding and bypasses. For many, Dr. Nicholson says, the results are exactly what are needed to enable people who struggle with weight to lose it and keep it off.
