The Nicholson Clinic for Weight Loss Surgery’s founder discusses how surgical intervention can boost overall quality of life.
Plano, TX, July 2015 – While it’s long been established that weight loss either through diet and exercise or surgical means can lower the risks for a variety of health complications, the impacts of surgery on psychological health haven’t been looked at quite as closely. New research, however, indicates that the results produced by bariatric surgery can have profoundly positive effects on people’s overall quality of life – physical and psychological.
“This latest research adds to the growing body of information that supports the idea that weight loss surgery can be incredibly impactful for people who shed pounds they’ve struggled to lose for years,” says Dr. Nick Nicholson, founder and lead surgeon at the Nicholson Clinic for Weight Loss Surgery. “While most people who have lost significant amounts of weight post-surgery can attest that it’s improved their outlook, the research adds credence to the claims.”
The latest findings come out of the National University of Distance Education where investigators looked into 21 previously conducted studies to get a feeling for the connection between quality of life and weight in obese people both before and after surgical intervention. The complied studies involved some 2,680 people before surgery and 2,251 people after surgery. The findings indicate that successful weight loss surgery can boost quality of life related to both physical and psychological aspects, lending to the growing body of research that indicates there is than mere cosmetic concerns.
“When people who are obese are able to shed pounds safely and effectively, they lower their risks for a variety of health concerns, including certain forms of cancer, diabetes, heart disease and more,” says Dr. Nicholson. “This research also supports the contention that successful weight loss associated with surgery can boost outlook, esteem and overall quality of life. If obesity is a chronic concern, surgical intervention may provide the assistance required to help people lose weight once and for all.”
