What is ATP?
Adenosine triphosphate, more commonly known as ATP, is the body's most basic form of energy. ATP transports energy within cells, and is a vital function of metabolism.
Every single cell in the human body produces ATP, but it is made up of some very specific components. One molecule of ATP contains three phosphate groups. When your body's metabolism uses ATP as an energy source, it is broken down into its component precursors.
It's simple to think of ATP as a battery. It is the stored form of energy, ready for instantaneous use whenever the body's metabolism requires it. But when energy levels are low, the human body must struggle to re-assemble ATP molecules, causing performance levels, muscle recovery and other metabolism processes to slow.
