There is something very special about candles during the winter, isn’t there? Especially during the Holiday Season! BUT did you know that December is the peak month for fires started by candles? In this blog we want to just go over a few basic candle safety tips. Yep, we all know these facts, but sometimes we all need a quick refresher. These facts are courtesy of the National Fire Protection Agency. Quick Facts: Roughly one-third of home candle fires started in the bedroom. Falling asleep was a factor in 11% percent of the home candle fires and 37% of the associated deaths. More than half of all candle fires start when things that can burn are too close to the candle. On average, 29 home candle fires were reported per day. If you are going to make candles a part of your holiday decorations, follow some of the tips below: § Burn candles within a one-foot circle, free of anything that can burn. § Never leave candles burning unattended. § Extinguish candles after use. § Use a non-combustible saucer or candleholder. § Use candle holders that are sturdy, and won’t tip over easily. § Place candle holders on a sturdy, uncluttered surface. § Light candles carefully. Keep your hair and any loose clothing away from the flame. § Don’t burn a candle all the way down….snuff it out before it gets too close to the holder or the container. § NEVER use a candle if oxygen is being used in the home. § Have flashlights and battery-powered lighting ready to use during a power outage. NEVER use candles. And of course it goes without saying: Never leave a child alone in a room with a burning candle. EVER!!! Not to answer the door, the phone, or turn off the stove……NEVER! Also keep matches and lighters up high and out children’s reach, in a locked cabinet.
