Gum disease can go undetected for years. Though it can cause irreversible damage, in the early stages there may be no symptoms at all. When Gum Care Is Needed Special gum care cleanings are done for patients with gum disease. Gum disease is detected at your exam and cleaning appointments by measurements taken by the dentist or hygienist. People with early gum disease often have no symptoms. Some signs that you may have gum disease in more advanced stages: Persistent Bad breath Gums that bleed easily when you brush or floss Persistent bad taste Gum tissue that is swollen and/or painful Loose teeth What's Involved with In-Clinic Gum Care? Our dentists and hygienists deal with gum disease on a daily basis. Since gum disease affects everyone differently, we don’t treat everyone the same. We help our patients by developing a customized treatment plan to address their specific issues. Periodontal Maintenance Periodontal maintenance cleanings are usually done on a more frequent basis (many times every 3-4 months). Plaque, tartar (hardened plaque) and stains are removed from all teeth. The teeth are flossed and polished. Special attention is given to clean and disinfect areas that are affected by gum disease. Scaling and Root Planing Scaling and root planing involves a deep cleaning of the root surfaces and localized placement of antibiotics below the gum tissue in problematic areas. Scaling and root planing helps to remove plaque, tartar, and toxins that are trapped deep below the gum line. Once removed, the gum tissue can have a chance to heal. Good home care is crucial to getting the best results.
