Business profile

Christopher B. Nelson has been president of St. John's College in Annapolis, Maryland, since June 1991

The vibrant culture at St. John's College in Annapolis dates back to the college's founding in 1696. Our students, known as Johnnies, pursue a common curriculum where they read the Great Books and participate in small, discussion-based classes of 20 students or fewer. Instead of having majors and textbooks, Johnnies take interdisciplinary classes that explore ideas in philosophy, literature, math, science, music, language, politics, and more. St. John's is known as the most rigorously intellectual college in the country, engaging great authors such as Plato, Shakespeare, Cervantes, Newton, Austen, Darwin, Einstein, Woolf, and Du Bois. Popular campus traditions include sailing on the Chesapeake Bay and the world-famous croquet match against the U.S. Naval Academy. The college is located in the heart of historic Annapolis, Maryland, a lively city just 30 miles from Washington, DC and Baltimore. Downtown, students can stroll along the famous City Dock waterfront, sit on the many benches surrounding the Maryland State House, or explore College Creek, the Chesapeake Bay's largest restored natural shoreline. Students may also opt to spend time at the college's other campus in Santa Fe, NM. St. John's is regularly ranked in the top ten colleges for best undergraduate teaching, most accessible faculty, and happiest students. Nearly 70% pursue graduate education, and St. John's is in the top 2% of all colleges for the number of students who receive PhDs. Well-known alumni include Francis Scott Key, writer of the Star-Spangled Banner; Ahmet Ertegun, founder of Atlantic Records; Ben Sasse, United States Senator; and Lydia Polgreen, Editor-in-Chief of the Huffington Post.
